Funky Soul
Velvet Walrus brings a smooth and funky blend of classic hit music from soul to rock to funk to reggae. With instrumentation that includes bass, keys, drums sax and flute we don’t seek to replicate the recordings exactly, rather we like to play well loved songs in our own smooth vintage sound.
Origin Story
Our music draws inspiration from nature. Like many species on Earth, Velvet Walrus was born partly by necessity and partly by accident. Concise version: We came together because a friend needed a band for his party and …. three weeks later Velvet Walrus was born!

Artistic Influence
We draw from a wide range of influences and experiences. Rock, Motown, Funk, Folk, Soul, Church, Jazz. Our current setlist includes well-known selections from the catalogs of Ray Charles, Elton John, Bob Marley, Queen, Men without Hats, Mel Tourme, Dire Straits, Willie Nelson, and many others.
Animal Habitat Protection
Our chosen mission – beyond making fun music – is to promote awareness of issues affecting the environment and helping promote the idea of taking action to protect endangered species. As Walrus-es we are slightly biased towards Arctic Animals, but honestly we’d like to protect them all. (Except mosquitos can go, actually, and ticks I guess too…)
